Martin Saastre - Aura

18 May - 24 June 2006 17 rue des Filles du Calvaire 75003 Paris

Galerie les Filles du Calvaire presents "AURA", the first solo exhibition of Martin Sastre in France. Uruguayan artist born in Montevideo in 1976, he has become one of the major figures of his generation in the new art of Latin America.

For this exhibition the artist based his work on the mysterious envelope that surrounds the Objects or People that will then be transformed into Icons, objects of worship, stars ... or Uruguayan artists.

Basing his work on the video medium, this artist is recognized as the creator of a "unique" language mixing pop and political speeches, making his works an exercise in social denunciation to the rhythm of "hits" that have marked us all.

The globalized world seen by a South American artist - and especially a Uruguayan - trying to make his way in the international art world is - in the vision of this artist - a world full of irony, humor and paradoxes.

In his videos, Martin Sastre has sworn to masturbate Britney Spears with a giant Q-tip in his work "Masturbated Virgin" (5 min. 2001), he has confronted international star Mr. Matthew Barney in a sword duel in his work "BOLIVIA 3: Confederation Next" (15 min. 2004) and he even recently revealed to the world in "Diana: The Rose Conspiracy" (20 min. 2005) that for the last eight years, since her accident in Paris, Princess Diana has been hiding from her enemies in one of the poorest areas of Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital.

Having exhibited in the most important biennials in the world (Havana 2003, Sao Paulo 2004, Venice 2005) and also in Australia, Spain, England or Brazil, Martin Sastre "gets gold" for his first solo exhibition in Paris.
