From November 3 to December 20, 2023, Les Filles du calvaire Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of the Belgian artist Lore Stessel, titled "Wave." This exhibition brings together a collection of unique photographic works that result from the encounter between the photographer and the dancer(s).
Lore Stessel studied painting and then photography, and it is between these two arts that she expresses herself.
From painting, which she learned at the Luca School of Arts in Brussels, she retained the medium and the gesture, the one through which she applies gelatin-silver emulsion to canvas, allowing for the development of her images. However, everything else in her practice ties her to photography, which she learned at the National School of Photography in Arles: recording images on film, their development, and the creation of her prints. She uses the tools and techniques of photography, but it is in the execution of these actions that the images come to life. In her darkroom, they emerge from the canvas, revealing themselves through the interaction of light and material, just as they are born from the encounter between Lore and those she invites to her gaze. The eye records, the hand reveals. The gesture, from the eye to the hand, interprets.
