Exhibition from October 24th to November 30th, 2024
Les filles du calvaire gallery is delighted to present for the first time Scarlett Coten's trilogy "M", comprised of three series created between 2012 and 2023. These works explore the theme of contemporary masculinities, from the Mediterranean region shaken by revolutions to America during the Trump era, and encompassing present-day France: "Mectoub", captured across seven countries in the Maghreb and the Middle East; "Plan américain", spanning thirteen American states; and "La disparition de James Bond", realized in France.
"M" highlights a generation that, for over a decade, has been challenging gender structures and reshaping worldviews. This project examines the political act of asserting individuality for these young men, offering a shift in perspective and decentering: a woman's gaze on men (designated as such at birth) who defy gender norms, liberate themselves from the constraints and pressures of the traditional singular model, and redefine identity as multifaceted and fluid.
This work invites us to dismantle myths and rethink notions of gender and identity beyond cultural and geographical boundaries.
Exhibition included in the Photo Days 2024 itinerary.
