SIDE STEP BOOGIE WOOGIE

Curator: Sarina Basta

A proposal by Olivier Mosset

After an initial exhibition at New Space Liège, the Step by Step Boogie Woogie project takes on a new form in the historical space of the Les Filles du Calvaire gallery (17 rue des Filles du Calvaire, Paris), under the title Side Step Boogie Woogie. While the first installment focused on highlighting the connection between Piet Mondrian, music, and dance, the exhibition at the gallery explores the communities formed around the artist and the artistic lineages that followed.

This series of exhibitions originated from an anecdote about Piet Mondrian, the communities that formed around him, his love for jazz, and dance. Captivated by the enthusiasm generated by the artist Piet Mondrian, Olivier Mosset, a Swiss painter living in the United States and involved in the French art scene since the sixties, proposes to create a multidisciplinary scenography. Visitors are invited to wander through a reconstitution of Mondrian's last studio in the United States, set up in 1943, serving as a scenography for a choreographic piece by Marie-Agnès Gillot and Maxime Thomas. Dance, music, artistic communities, and Mondrian are the guiding threads of this exhibition.

The participating artists include John Armleder, Art Orienté Objet, Donald Baechler, Francis Baudevin, Robert Barry, The Bells Angels, Carisa Bledsoe, Paz Corona, Alain de Clerck, Philippe Decrauzat, Vava Dudu, David Evrard, Marie-Agnès Gillot, Fritz Glarner, Eléonore False, Sylvie Fleury, Robert Indiana, Jacob Kassay, Jean-Charles Kien, Tilhenn Klapper, Sherrie Levine, Olivier Mosset, Amélie Mourgue d'Algue, G T Pellizzi, Kiki Smith, Maxime Thomas, Morgane Tschiember, and Marta Wengorovius.

Documentation is provided about Joséphine Baker and Gordon Parks.
