Lore Stessel, based in Brussels, Belgium, is an artist who explores the interface between photography and painting. The inherent tension between the human body and its surroundings has been a recurring theme in her works – how the impulse to move is shaped by contact with the external environment. In this dynamic collection of photographs, As the Sky Remembers the Sea, Stessel allows us to perceive the idiosyncratic traits of her subjects, to witness the muted gestures of their energetic bodies, and to trace the subtle path between their inner intentions and outer interactions. Her working process is as physical as her subjects, who she renders, through photography and painting, onto life-size canvases.
