LAIA ABRIL AT LA BIENNALE DE L'IMAGE POSSIBLE, LIÈGE

ON RAPE: A HISTORY OF MISOGYNY, CHAPTER TWO

The second chapter of A History of Misogyny (on rape) was presented at Les Filles du Calvaire Gallery in 2020 before being exhibited at the Biennale de l’Image Possible (Liege), FOAM (Amsterdam), and currently at the Musée des Beaux-Arts Le Locle. In this exhibition, the artist continues to expand her ongoing visual archive of the systemic control of women’s bodies across time and cultures. Regarding her work, Abril writes, « by scrutinizing, conceptualizing and visualizing diverse miscarriages of justice across historical regulations, toxic dynamics and victims’ testimonies, the project aims to call out the institutional rape culture prevalent in societies around de world. I’m looking at rape by exploring how concepts of myths, power, and law, relate to the constructions of the notion of masculinity and sexual violence. »
