Corps à Corps, Histoire(s) de la Photographie

Centre Pompidou, Paris

Works by Laïa Abril and Christer Strömholm are part of the exhibition Corps à Corps (Body to Body) at the Centre Pompidou until March 25, 2024.

Bringing together more than five hundred photographs and documents by some one hundred and twenty historical and contemporary photographers, "Corps à corps" offers an unprecedented look at photographic representations of the human race in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The exhibition goes beyond classic categories of study such as "portraiture", "self-portraiture", "nudes" and "humanist" photography. It reveals particularities, "photographic" ways of seeing, and makes visible correspondences between artists.
We discover common obsessions, both in the way they approach the subject and in their stylistic approach. The images on display also raise questions about the photographer's responsibility: how does photography contribute to the creation and visibility of identities? How does it tell the story of individuality and relationships with others? A meeting between two exceptional collections - the public collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, and the private collection of film collector Marin Karmitz.
