Opening on Thursday, 7 November 2024
Exhibition from November 7 to December 21, 2024
Fragmentary Narratives, the new exhibition by Todd Hido at Les filles du calvaire gallery, will bring together both historical works and new productions. The photographer, acclaimed for his portraits of American landscapes, offers an optimistic perspective in these challenging times, from November 7 to December 21, 2024.
Todd Hido is a renowned American photographer known for his atmospheric images that capture urban landscapes, anonymous houses, interiors, and melancholic characters. His work revolves around themes of solitude, memory,
and the subconscious, with a particular focus on the interplay of light and shadow.
His photographs are often described as cinematic, evoking an implicit narrative that allows for the viewer’s interpretation.
Hido’s previous series were urgent calls in response to a world already threatened by ecological disasters. At that time, climate change was a distant concern, rarely discussed, with its effects seeming remote. Today, these effects are undeniable, manifesting with violence and devastation that affect all regions of the globe. In this new exhibition, Hido chooses to reveal the beauty and hope that persist, even within the most troubled landscapes. Family collages highlight the importance of finding comfort in our loved ones and strengthening bonds essential for facing an increasingly uncertain future.
Far from being a simple retrospective of his earlier work, this exhibition marks an artistic reinvention, through exciting new photographs, curated to interact with carefully chosen classic images. Through Hido’s lens, each scene becomes a visual poem, capturing light in a way that evokes both mystery and clarity, nature and the human condition. Each image is an invitation to discover beauty and hope in the simplest moments, illuminated by a fresh, poetic perspective.
Hido’s photographs have been exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Rencontres d’Arles, the Cleveland Museum of Art, Pier 24, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His works are part of over fifty public and private collections, including those of the Guggenheim and the Getty. His work has influenced several Hollywood productions, and he is one of the subjects of the documentary On The Roam by Jason Momoa, aired on HBO Max.
Exhibition included in the Photo Days 2024 itinerary.
